HIGH WATER CONSUMPTION?  WE WILL TRY TO CALL YOU!

The Cornwall Authority does try to contact you if when we have read the meters your consumption is higher than normal.  This is a great reason to make sure your contact information is current.  (see the public notification form).
The Authority knows there are many reasons for higher consumption.  The pool has been topped-off, the flowers need watered and the kids are home from college to name a few.
We also know that water leaks occur that are never heard.  A leak inside the toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day.  That does not sound like much, but when you take it times the 91 days between water meter reads that can equal 18,200 gallons of water!
Here are some easy ways to see if you have a leak in your home and we encourage you to do this twice a year:
• Compare the consumption on your current bill with your previous consumption.  The Authority has your consumption trends easily available from back to 2007.
• Check the date range on your bills.  Normally consumptions are lower over the winter months.  If your consumption is higher, you may have a problem.
• Toilets are one of the biggest water users.  A toilet can leak and you never hear it.  A toilet leak can be detected by adding a few drops of food coloring into the toilet tank.  Do not flush the toilet.  If later you fine the colored water appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking.
If you suspect you have a leak, the ultimate tip we can offer is to do the following:
1. Make sure no one is using the water
2. Make sure your appliances are not drawing water
3. Go to your inside meter location
4. If the red indicator is spinning – water is passing through your meter and you have a draw on your meter and the potential for a water leak
